bc-shorts-04

An absolutely wonderfully diverse showcase of shorts made by local film-makers, from the wacky to weird, the heartwarming to frightening, the off-beat to the mysterious– this is a not-to-miss event. Lots of the filmmakers will be there for Q&A.

The NWFF Board is very pleased to introduce a new category to the festival – short films made locally. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll wonder, you’ll cringe, and you will be thoroughly entertained.

Pass the Salt | 9:58 min.
Two young women invite their families over for dinner. They have announcement to make. But there are many strikes against all this going well. Get ready for some good laughs.

Grey Matter | 13 min.
The fact that this film is based on a Stephen King story will give you a clue of what horror might arise when two youngish teenage boys decide to go out for the evening with two young women. An excellent film made by Rockridge High School film students.

Scattered | 9:39 min.
Two women have the rather awkward task of scattering the ashes of their friend. Being new to this experience, they must find a way to do this with some dignity despite their differing views on how to affect this. Awkwardly funny.

Perfunct | 11:26 min.
A woman living in an apartment building comes to realize that the rest of the tenants seem to be acting in a very rote, habitual way, who don’t respond to any changes in their lives or environment. She takes drastic action. A weird commentary on our lives perhaps?

The Man in the Rabbit Mask | 5:11 min.
Two tween girls looking for something to do decide to tell each other a scary story. It turns out to be way more fantastical than they expected.

All About You | 3:20 min. This strange and joyful music video unleashes the work of choreographer Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg and four of Canada’s most exciting dancers/performers onto the streets of Vancouver with their weird and cool interpretation of The Royal Oui’s song “All About You”.

Soak | 9:44 min.
A very inventive approach to detailing the lives of a couple through each of their stress-soothing meditations in the bath, over time… taking the viewer through the ‘ups and downs’ of their lives.

Holiday Spirit | 5 min.
The Christmas Spirit is somewhat marred by a murderer at a Collectables Shop. This film was made in 48 hours by some local filmmakers and it is quite delightful in an weird sort of way.
